Dodge won't call its new small car Hornet

Hornet221
Dodge has been wise in reviving old nameplates to inject some excitement into its contemporary model lineup. Recent products like the Challenger and Charger – both named after classics from the brand's past – have drummed up a considerable amount of enthusiasm where names like Stratus and Intrepid could not. But don't expect that formula to be applied to everything Dodge puts out.

Contrary to rumors that the upcoming replacement for the Caliber would bear the name Hornet, a report from The Detroit News suggests that it will not. The nameplate originates from the Hudson Hornet that was built by the American Motors Corporation in the 1950s and the AMC Hornet that followed in the '70s before the company was subsumed into Chrysler. The original re-appeared as Doc Hudson in the computer-animated Pixar film Cars, and was revived off-screen for a concept car (pictured above) which Dodge showed in 2006.

The new production compact, set to compete against the likes of the Chevrolet Cruze and Ford Focus, will fill a critical role for Chrysler, which currently lacks a viable competitor in that vital segment. Whatever it's called, it's being jointly developed with Fiat and is expected to bow sometime early in the new year. We'll just have to wait to see what they call it.

Pair of Kia Optima Turbos will compete in World Challenge against Mustangs and Camaros

Optimarace02-1321490046-opt
The Kia Optima is headed to the World Challenge next year. Kia has announced that it will once again partner up with Kinetic Motorsports, this time to build a pair of Optima SX models to go fender to fender with the rest of the World Challenge field. The two turbocharged sedans will compete in the Grand Touring Sport Class against vehicles like the Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro, if you can believe that.

If you're thinking those two are going to make short work of the Optima, you may want to think again. Kia has already managed to earn a driver and team championship in the two years that it's been racing the Forte in the States, and the company recently announced the Rio 5-Door would be competing, as well. These guys aren't just out there to parade their badge around the track.

The World Challenge series pits great drivers against each other in race-prepped versions of production vehicles on some of the country's best road courses. The series campaigns at Infineon, Road Atlanta and the street circuit at Long Beach. Look for the races to show up on the NBC Sports Network this year.

Dodge Challenger SRT Yellow Jacket and Charger SRT8 Super Bee debuting in LA

2012-dodge-challenger-yellow-jacket-large-opt
Chrysler is taking a page from the insect world with its latest set of high-performance machinery. Just as the bright yellow and black motif of a bumble bee is meant to warn potential predators that they might get stung if they come too close, the new 2012 Charger SRT8 Super Bee and Challenger SRT8 392 Yellow Jacket feature Stinger Yellow and Pitch Black paint schemes to signal their ill intent.

Included in the Charger Super Bee package for 2012, in either yellow or black motifs, is a full sticker and stripe package highlighting the 3D helmeted bee logo along with five-spoke aluminum wheels with black painted pockets. Inside, the cloth interior is punctuated with yellow and silver striping and stitching. Subtle it is not.

Similarly, the Challenger Yellow Jacket is covered in various coatings of yellow and black, both inside and out, with the addition of a new Yellow Jacket logo. Both models come equipped with Chrysler's venerable 6.4-liter Hemi V8 engine that puts out 470 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque. The Challenger is available with either a six-speed manual or five-speed automatic; the Charger offers only the auto.

You'll be able to see both machines live and in living color at the upcoming LA Auto Show. Ordering is slated to begin in December and the first shipments will arrive sometime in the first quarter of 2012.

Kelly Blue Book Reports Vehicle Manufacturers With Best Total Cost of Ownership. Kia Takes the Number One Spot!

Kia_2
Audi, Kia Lead Luxury, Non-Luxury Segments with Minimal Depreciation, Low Fuel Costs

IRVINE, Calif., Aug. 15, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Kelley Blue Book www.kbb.com, the leading provider of new car and used car information, today reports the top three luxury and top three non-luxury brands with the lowest average Total Cost of Ownership for the initial five-year ownership period.  Based on Kelley Blue Book's analysis, Audi, Lexus and Cadillac (respectively) top all luxury brands, while Kia, Hyundai and Honda (respectively) dominate among all non-luxury brands for lowest average total ownership costs.

Total Cost of Ownership is developed using Kelley Blue Book® Residual Values to calculate depreciation costs.  Depreciation plays the largest role in Total Cost of Ownership, followed by the cost of fuel during the ownership period.  Kelley Blue Book calculates total ownership costs for new vehicles by applying a sophisticated valuation methodology along with critical financial data from third-party providers.

By reviewing the Total Cost of Ownership for vehicles on their consideration list, consumers can better understand the overall financial implications associated with vehicle ownership through the initial five-year ownership period.  Kelley Blue Book's Total Cost of Ownership features easy-to-understand charts and graphs on kbb.com to help car shoppers make informed purchase decisions by breaking down the typical ownership costs for a particular vehicle, including depreciation, expected fuel costs, insurance, maintenance and repair costs, state fees and more.

"The average vehicle typically maintains about 30 percent of its original MSRP after five years of ownership, whereas a handful of vehicles maintain more than 45 percent after the same time period," said Eric Ibara, director of residual value consulting for Kelley Blue Book.  "The new Total Cost of Ownership data on kbb.com is based on Kelley Blue Book Residual Values, which are used by banks and manufacturers nationwide."

At the brand level, Audi and Lexus currently have the lowest depreciation and best fuel economy among luxury brands, giving them an advantage in low cost of ownership at the luxury level.  In addition, Audi, Lexus and Cadillac all offer models that carry a lower MSRP compared to other luxury brands.  Combined with their entry-level vehicles, these brands stand out among their competitors for having low overall ownership cost.  Audi's Total Cost of Ownership success is primarily driven by the A3 2.0T and A4 2.0T sedan models.  Both edge out competitors with their minimal depreciation and stellar fuel economy.

For non-luxury brands, Kia and Hyundai have a number of successful redesigns, greatly improved quality and competitive pricing, which sets them apart from other non-luxury brands in terms of cost of ownership.  Key Kia models contributing to the brand's low Total Cost of Ownership include the Rio, Optima and Forte.  Additionally, Honda continues to be a reliable choice with strong fuel economy and customer loyalty.

"Kelley Blue Book's Total Cost of Ownership gives car shoppers a realistic view of what they will spend during the initial one- to five-year ownership period, allowing them to get the most for their dollar in today's economy," said Juan Flores, director of vehicle valuation for Kelley Blue Book.  "More informative than simply having the purchase price alone, Total Cost of Ownership empowers car shoppers by including all significant costs that are part of the ownership experience."

All-New 2012 Kia Rio Providing an Unbeatable Combination of Power and Efficiency

2012-kia-rio-5
The completely redesigned 2012 Kia Rio—which was first conceived here in the U.S. at Kia’s California design studio—will provide customers with a lot to like in the subcompact segment, but it certainly won’t cost a lot. In fact, Kia recently announced that the MSRP of the Rio sedan will start at just $13,400, while the price of admission to the five-door hatchback will open at $13,600—that’s $1,900 less than the least-expensive Ford Fiesta hatchback.

The Rio also provides an unbeatable combination of power and efficiency, too. In addition to two body styles, it also offers two transmissions (both a six-speed automatic or a similarly cogged manual) in three well-contented trim levels, and all offer both 30 mpg city/40 mpg highway and a class-leading 138 hp. Helping the Rio achieve these marks: An advanced 1.6-liter I4 engine with gasoline direct injection (GDI) technology, as well as the first stop/start system ever seen in the segment. Kia’s Idle Stop and Go feature shuts off the engine when the Rio comes to a stop, then quickly and seamlessly restarts the powerplant as soon as the driver’s foot comes off the brake pedal. Before being introduced on the Rio, this technology was only available on hybrids and expensive luxury vehicles.

Other high-tech goodies the Rio is bringing to the segment include UVO, Kia’s Microsoft-powered, voice-activated infotainment system, with a 4.2-inch color touchscreen and rear-view camera, along with other standard and available features like:

  • LED front accent lights and rear tail lights
  • Kia’s “Supervision” meter cluster
  • Seat foam material that’s derived from castor oil for 100 percent biodegradability
  • A full suite of safety enhancers, including Electronic Stability Control (ESC), a four-wheel Anti-lock Brake
  • System (ABS), Hill-start Assist Control (HAC) and Vehicle Stability Management (VSM)
  • An AM/FM/XM/CD/MP3 sound system with three complimentary months of satellite radio service
  • Bluetooth functionality
  • Push-button start and remote keyless entry
  • Heated front seats and six-way power-adjustable driver’s seat

Significantly, the Rio also is fully covered by the automaker’s industry-leading warranty package—standard on all Kia vehicles—which includes a 10-year/100,000-mile limited powertrain warranty, a five-year/60,000-mile limited basic warranty, a five-year/100,000-mile anti-perforation warranty and a five-year/60,000-mile roadside assistance plan.

The 2012 Kia Rio 5-door is on sale now, with the sedan slated to enter the marketplace later this year.

2011 SEMA: Kia Goes Racing with 2012 Rio B-Spec and Optima Hybrid USTCC Pace Car

Kia-racing-sema-1
Looking to further associate itself with the world of motorsports after the first two motorsports championships in company's history in the 2011 Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge (CTSSC), Kia today unveiled two more track-ready models at the 2011 SEMA Show, the 2012 Rio 5-door B-Spec racecar and the Optima Hybrid pace car.

Developed in partnership with Kinetic Motorsports, the new Rio 5-door B-Spec racer will compete in the newly established showroom stock racing class against various subcompact rivals such as the Mazda2, Honda Fit and Ford Fiesta starting from 2012.

The Rio B-Spec is eligible to race in numerous motorsport events including the World Challenge, GRAND-AM, Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) and National Auto Sport Association (NASA).

Aside from purchasing a stock 2012 Kia Rio 5-door hatchback, those interested will have to buy the B-Spec kit that costs $14,000 from Kia’s racing partner, Kinetic Motorsports, and either build the car themselves or shell out another $6,000 to have the team at Kinetic Motorsports assemble the racecar at their shop in Buford, Georgia.

The B-Spec package includes a roll cage, racing seat, quick-release steering wheel, racing harness, race shocks, lightweight wheels, spec-series tires, an oil sump pan expansion kit and complete build instructions.

Also making its world premiere in Las Vegas is a specially modified Optima Hybrid that will take over the role of the official pace car of the United States Touring Car Championship (USTCC) from the Soul.

Built by GoGoGear, the Optima Hybrid Pacecar has been fitted with a free-flow air intake system, Magnaflow exhaust system, coil-over suspension kit to lower the ride height, front splitter and rear wing, lightweight wheels and performance tires.

Other highlights include a black exterior paintwork with lime-green graphics and LED auxiliary lights, while GoGoGear also updated the interior with a not so pacecar-like 2,400-watt audio and video system with dual seven-inch monitors in the front-seat headrests.

Kia said that the Optima Hybrid Safety Car will make its first appearance at the USTCC in March of 2012.

Kia and Antenna Magazine Are Pairing up to Make A Retro Surf-Themed Rio

Surf-themed-rio

Interested in checking out Sema this year? Well, we know that there is always a lot to see at Sema, and Kia is not going to let this event pass them by. Kia has decided to team up with Antenna Magazine to create a special surf-themed concept car to show off in Las Vegas at Sema. We will be seeing a 2012 5-door Kia Rio which will be customized with sun-set metallic paint, some custom gold wheels, and a wooden front splitter. This is going to make for one heck of a Kia Rio, undoubtedly. Heck, just check out the picture that is associated with this article, and you will get a little sneak peak of what you can expect to see at Sema this year.

Inside of the Kia Rio you can expect to find a 1980’s gaming console, a record player, and even shelves if you want to put away your shoes and swimsuits. However, there is definitely one flaw in this custom Rio. They forgot to put a surf rack on top of the vehicle, which would make it much easier to transport your boards to the beach.

That is not only the design flaw we can see in this special Rio. For instance, they decided to put the vinyl record player underneath the shelves which can contain your shoes and swimsuits. This is a poor decision when it comes to the design of the car, because if someone actually wanted to use the record player, sand could get on it from the shoes and swimsuits. I believe we all know that sand and record players do not typically go hand-in-hand with each other. Kia plans on showing off this custom Rio on November 1st.

SEMA Preview: Dodge Readies Hardcore Challenger SRT8 ACR

Mopar_acr_ch-1
Inspired by the now-discontinued Dodge Viper SRT10 ACR that recently posted a new record lap time of 7:12.13 at the Nürburgring Nordschleife track in Germany, Chrysler Group’s Mopar Underground team decided to apply a similar treatment to the latest Challenger SRT8 392 and bring it to the upcoming 2011 SEMA Show.

The track focused but street-legal Challenger SRT8 ACR has been upgraded with a host of Mopar performance parts including, a coil-over suspension, front-and rear-strut tower braces, short-throw shifter, front splitter, cat-back exhaust, custom exhaust headers and a set of Goodyear F1 Supercar tires.

The team also made changes to the muscle car's exterior and interior. On the outside, we find similar design cues to the Viper SRT10 ACR such as a white body with a charcoal painted roof and flame red stripe that runs the length of the car, along with a carbon fiber hood, rear deck lid, rear spoiler and tail lamp surrounds.

Other exterior details include the red painted mirror caps and brake calipers, unique black five-spoke 20-inch alloy wheels and red “ACR” fender badging.

As for the interior, the Mopar Underground team tried to reduce the car's weight by removing the rear seat bench and adding carbon fiber door panels. The ACR Challenger also gets a pair of bucket sport seats with openings for a racing harness, a three-spoke flat-bottom steering wheel, SRT gauge cluster, custom bright pedal kit, Mopar Drag Pack center stack and a carbon fiber center console finish.

The roll bar and fire extinguisher complete the modifications.

Check Out The Epic 2011 Mopar Dodge Charger R/T Limited Edition

2011-mopar-11-dodge-charger-rt-front-three-quarter-623x389
The good ‘ol boys at Mopar stopped by our HQ today to show us their latest project – the 2011 Mopar Dodge Charger. This limited-edition black and blue Charger is gifted with Mopar bits to make it perform better on the track, while still being completely driveable on the street.

To create the Mopar Charger, Mopar first started with a stock Dodge Charger R/T with the optional “Super Trac Pack” selected, which includes performance steering, a sport suspension, heavy duty brakes, and a track-calibrated three-mode electronic stability control system. Under the hood, Mopar keeps the stock 5.7-liter Hemi V-8 intact.

Power on the Mopar Charger is unchanged, producing a healthy 370-hp and 395 lb-ft of torque, although the Mopar reps noted that this particular Charger was fitted with a Mopar cat-back exhaust. The performance modifications that Mopar made to this car include a thicker front and rear sway bar (30 mm and 20 mm, up from 27 mm and 16 mm, respectively), the addition of a front and rear strut tower brace, and most importantly a shorter final drive ratio. The Mopar Charger gets a 3.91 final drive ratio, as opposed to a stock Charger’s 3.06. Mopar says the new ratio allows the Charger to hustle to 60 mph in just over 5 seconds.

Other changes to the Mopar Charger include unique “Pitch Black” paint, with a Mopar Blue stripe on the driver’s side of the car (good for an additional 5 hp). Rounding out the exterior are unique 20-inch Envy wheels, painted Pitch Black with a Mopar logo in the center cap.

The black and blue theme carries over into the interior of the car. Mopar Chargers are outfitted with custom Katzkin leather seats with Mopar blue piping and stripes, and a matching steering wheel. Mopar Chargers also get a unique pistol grip shifter hooked up to the stock five-speed automatic transmission. When we asked a Mopar rep point-blank why they didn’t offer the manual transmission from the Challenger for the Mopar Charger, he only said he “can’t comment on future product plans.”

Customers who order one of the 1500 Mopar Chargers (131 of those earmarked for our neighbors up North, the rest for the United States) will receive a personalized owners kit including ’69 Charger artwork, a Mopar Key fob and flash drive, and a certificate with the vehicle's VIN, date of manufacture and vehicle number. While the 2011 Mopar Charger costs $39,750, Mopar reps said that those who wanted to forgo (or can’t afford) the special edition package can just as easily piece it together (short of the unique paint job) out of the Mopar catalog.

Do Mopar’s changes to the Charger actually make a difference? Stay tuned to find out.

Kia expands racing program with Rio-based B-spec race car

Webkia-rio-b-spec
Of all the things that you could call a Kia, "racy" isn't the one that jumps first to mind. But the budget-oriented Korean automaker has been competing in Grand-Am, and is stepping things up (or down) a notch with the racer you see here.

Built for the B-Spec showroom stock class, this Rio five-door has been fitted with the requisite safety features (like a stripped-out cabin and roll cage) but little else. Kinetic Motorsports did the preparation work with an eye on numerous different racing series, but we'll have to wait another couple of weeks until SEMA when the car's set to be unveiled for all the details

Congratulations to the Kia hamsters on receiving the "Rookie of the Year" award!

Renderimage
Kia's Music-Loving Hamsters Named First-Ever "Rookie Of The Year" in Annual Madison Avenue Advertising Walk of Fame Public Vote

IRVINE, Calif., Oct. 5, 2011 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- Since bursting on the scene in 2009 to announce the arrival of the funky Soul urban passenger vehicle, Kia Motors' lovable hamsters have resonated with consumers and critics while entertaining the young and the young-at-heart in movie theaters, on television and across the web. In recognition of the public's quick embrace of the campaign, the Madison Avenue Advertising Walk of Fame honored Kia's hamsters yesterday with its first-ever "Rookie of the Year" award.

"In just two years the hamsters have become pop culture icons and driven record sales for the Soul and the Kia brand," said Michael Sprague, vice president, marketing & communications, KMA. "The Soul and its advertising were designed to stand out in a sea of sameness, and this 'Rookie of the Year' honor is a tribute to the hamsters' viral success and ability to grab the attention of consumers looking for something with a unique style and personality."

Each campaign starring the hamsters was created by Kia Motors America's (KMA) advertising agency of record, David&Goliath, and received numerous accolades including Nielsen's "Automotive Ad of the Year" two years in a row and Silver and Gold Effie awards. The most recent installment, titled "Share Some Soul," finds three hamsters bringing style and flair to a dark and dreary scene with LMFAO's hit song "Party Rock Anthem" blasting from the speakers and quickly capture the attention of battling robots when they emerge from their Soul and begin performing the latest dance trend - shuffling. The Hamsters' positive energy causes the alien robots and humanoids to stop fighting, drop their weapons and shuffle and party together.

Collectively, the "A New Way to Roll," "This or That" and "Share Some Soul" campaigns have contributed to significant increases in consumer awareness, perception and consideration of the Kia brand in the U.S., attracted millions of online views and helped KMA recently surpassed its all-time best annual sales total in less than nine months.

About Kia Motors America

Kia Motors America (KMA) is the marketing and distribution arm of Kia Motors Corporation based in Seoul, South Korea. KMA offers a complete line of vehicles through more than 745 dealers throughout the United States and serves as the "Official Automotive Partner of the NBA." In 2010, KMA recorded its best-ever U.S. sales and 16th consecutive year of increased U.S. market share. Kia is poised to continue its momentum and will continue to build the brand through design innovation, quality, value, safety features and new technologies.

2012 Kia Rio brings 'start-stop' technology to masses

Riox-wide-community
The drumbeat of idling engines at stoplights is starting to be replaced by dead silence.

It's the result of more use of "start-stop" engine technology that shuts off the engine when the car is stopped for more than few seconds, then restarts it, in most systems, when the driver releases the brake.

Commonly used in hybrids, it's just now coming to conventional vehicles in the U.S. market -- mostly high-end vehicles. Though it requires some tricky electronic controls, in a conventional car, a start-stop system requires only a beefed-up battery and starter and a few other parts.

Enter the 2012 Kia Rio subcompact, due in showrooms next month. The most inexpensive car in Kia's lineup -- today, Kia will announce a Rio starting price of $14,350 with shipping -- will offer start-stop as the centerpiece of a $400 "Eco" option on the redesigned 2012.

Kia -- at a price for the masses -- joins BMW and Porsche, which offer start-stop in the U.S. on several new models.

This could be the start of a start-stop wave, says John O'Dell, a senior editor Edmunds.com, who sees it on more than half of all models within five years. ""It's going to be very popular. It's a fairly inexpensive way to get a 3% to 5% fuel-economy increase."

That's a big deal as automakers race to find the cost-effective technology to raise average fuel economy to the required 35.5 miles per gallon by 2016.

Why don't more cars have it? It's partly because of how the Environmental Protection Agency conducts its tests.

With only about six parts, start-stop was a fairly simple addition to save gas in the Rio, says Kia product planner Steve Kosowski. He says Rio owners will gain, even though they won't see it reflected in the window-sticker mileage rating because of the EPA's test procedures.

The non-start-stop Rio will be rated the same as its sibling, the 2012 Hyundai Accent, which doesn't have stop-start. But because the EPA test cycle used few stops long enough for the engine to shut off, Kia estimates that a Rio with start-stop would rate just .1 or .2 mpg higher for city driving, But Kia says it will have much more impact in the real world for owners who choose the option.

Automakers currently are lobbying the government for testing that better counts start-stop in mileage ratings, as is done in Europe.

Dodge Charger Pursuit Charges Ahead

300px-2006_michigan_state_police_dodge_charger_2
The new 2012 Dodge Charger is already setting records! The Charger Pursuit V-8 model, designed as a high-performance police vehicle, recently broke records for the fastest lap time ever recorded, at 1:33.70. The new record was set at Grattan Raceway in Belding, Michigan, during the annual Police Vehicle Evaluation tests conducted by the Michigan State Police.

Peter Grade, the Vice President of Network Development and Fleet for the Chrysler Group LLC, commented on the new record, saying, “Achieving the fastest-ever lap time at the Michigan State Police’s annual Police Vehicle Evaluation test reflects the mission of the Dodge Charger Pursuit Team to equip our law enforcement officials with the absolute best combination of vehicle performance and tactical equipment.” He added, “Even more impressive is that all four Michigan State Police Vehicle Test Team drivers averaged their fastest times in the Charger Pursuit – reinforcing the driver confidence provided when world-class acceleration, braking, handling and dynamics are combined.”

The 2012 Dodge Charger has upgraded many features to enhance the vehicle’s performance. Among the improvements are a 5.7-liter HEMI V8 engine with 100,000 mile spark plugs; optional 3.06 rear-axle ratio for increased acceleration with the HEMI V-8; optional 3.07 rear-axle ratio for increased acceleration with Pentastar V-6; and high performance brake pads with a silicone brake caliper boot.

The 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine boasts 292 horsepower and 260 lb.-ft. of torque. The 5.7-liter HEMI V-8 engine, with 270 horsepower and 390 lb.ft. of torque, has Fuel Saver Technology and goes from 0-to-60 mph in less than six seconds.

All the improvements have paid off; every model of the Dodge Charger did well in the Police Vehicle Evaluation tests, including the 292 horsepower Charger Pursuit V-6 models. They averaged the fastest times for naturally aspirated (1:37.71) and E-85 capable (1:37.57) 6-cylinder police cars, and they excelled in rapid acceleration with the fastest 0-to-60 and 0-to-100 mph times. The Charger accelerated from 0 to 60 in 5.83 seconds, 0 to 80 in 9.10 seconds, and 0 to 100 in 13.65 seconds.

The development of the Dodge Charger Pursuit was overseen by Dodge’s Police Advisory Board.

Kia Soul Slam Shuffle invites you to bust a move like the Kia Soul Hamsters

Kia-soul-shuffle-slam
The Kia Soul Shuffle Slam invites dancers to party rock and showcase their moves in electro-pop group LMFAO-Inspired dance videos following the debut of the new "Share Some Soul" ad that has been viewed more than three million times on YouTube. Contestants have the opportunity to win $10,000 and to dance on stage with LMFAO.

Kia Share Some Soul advertising campaign features the brand's music-loving hamsters shufflin' to the beat of the smash hit Party Rock Anthem. Kia is now inviting dancers the world over to join the party and participate in a LMFAO-inspired dance video submission contest.

Hosted on the Kia Soul YouTube and Facebook channels, Kia Soul Shuffle Slam contestants will vie for the Grand Prize – $10,000 and an onstage appearance with the wildly popular electro-pop group LMFAO by submitting videos of themselves moving to Party Rock Anthem.

Share Some Soul
is the ad you’ve seen wherein the lovable hamsters burst onto the apocalyptic scene in an Alien Green Kia Soul, with Party Rock Anthem blasting out of the Kia’s 350-watt sound system. As they dance to the sound of the song that was number one on Billboard’s hot 100 for six full weeks, they quickly capture the attention of the warrior robots, who begin to do the Kia Soul Slam Shuffle – only not as well as the Kia Soul Hamsters.

“Soul’s immense popularity is due not only to its unique styling, wealth of technology and convenience features and overall value, but also to the role that music has played in our marketing efforts for this vehicle,” said Michael Sprague, vice president, marketing & communications, KMA. “LMFAO is a fun, energetic and exciting group, and just like the Soul has done since its launch in 2009, they pride themselves on standing out from the crowd. With the 2012 model year featuring increased horsepower and fuel efficiency, it makes perfect sense to extend our partnership with LMFAO by inviting dancers from all over the globe to show us their best shuffle for the opportunity to win some $10,000 and the dance opportunity of a lifetime.”

As part of the contest, visitors to the Kia Soul YouTube and Facebook channels will be able to vote for their favorites, helping to pick the contest's finalists. Four finalists will move on to the Kia Soul Shuffle Slam Showdown, where the videos will be judged by LMFAO's very own Redfoo and SkyBlu along with members of the popular dance team, Quest Crew. Participants can also connect the Kia Soul Slam Shuffle to their Facebook account and send dance challenges to their friends, as well as leave comments on the contest page via their Facebook and Twitter accounts.

Kia sets fuel record

739896

Kia Motors has set a new Guinness World Record for the lowest fuel consumption in a hybrid petrol vehicle, while on a road-trip in America through all 48 adjoining US states.

Drivers Wayne Gerdes from Wadsworth, Illinois, and Chris Bernius from New York City, successfully piloted a factory-standard 2011 Kia Optima Hybrid sedan through a 12 638.4km route across America and achieved an average fuel consumption of 3.64l/100km, beating the car’s official EPA highway fuel consumption figure by 61.37 percent.

Kia’s 48-state challenge was completed in 14 days driving an average of 902km per day.  The Optima Hybrid used just over 5.5 tanks of petrol to complete the route, recording an average distance of 2269km between fill-ups. To comply with Guinness World Record guidelines, the Optima Hybrid had to carry two people and their luggage throughout the journey.

The record attempt was verified by Philip Robertson, Adjudicator at Guinness World Records, who also presented the drivers with their Guinness World Record certificate at an official handover ceremony at Kia Motors’ manufacturing facility in West Point, Georgia on September 12.

The record set is officially titled “Lowest fuel consumption driving through all 48 contiguous US states in a petrol hybrid car,” which is a new category created by Guinness World Records.  In order to qualify for a new record, the Kia Optima Hybrid was required to achieve a minimum of 4.49l/100km, which the fuel-sipping Optima Hybrid exceeded by 23 percent.

After a send-off by local dignitaries and Kia team members on August 26 at Kia’s manufacturing facility in West Point, Georgia, the drivers departed on their epic journey in a clockwise direction.  They finished their route in the city of Greenville, South Carolina, just over two weeks later on September 9.

After a rigorous accreditation process by Guinness World Records, the drivers and car were transported to West Point for the closing ceremony and celebration.

Kia Motors Corporation COO and senior executive vice president Thomas Oh said: "Kia Motors is deeply proud to have set a new Guinness World Record.  It is testament to the quality of the design, engineering and production methods of the Kia Optima Hybrid.  The drivers had to complete their unsupported drive through all kinds of American terrain and weather conditions and they did it without a single hitch from the Optima Hybrid while setting what is such an impressive fuel consumption figure.

"While travelling across the United States the Optima Hybrid experienced temperatures ranging from more than 118 degrees Fahrenheit to less than freezing point.  The team climbed through the formidable Rocky mountain chain and negotiated rush hour traffic in Chicago, New York City and Las Vegas – which makes the Optima Hybrid’s fuel consumption figure all the more impressive," he said.

Record-breaking driver, Wayne Gerdes, said, “The Kia Optima Hybrid was the perfect vehicle for this long road trip.  It is spacious, comfortable and fun-to-drive, and the parallel gasoline-electric powertrain provided considerable efficiency at highway speeds and the car performed flawlessly throughout the drive.

“The remarkable economy figure we achieved included driving in all kinds of conditions, from straight open highway and deserts to gridlocked city traffic, so this really was the ultimate demonstration of the real-world fuel economy that any Optima Hybrid owner can achieve with attention to the details of their driving style.”

Kia-optima-hybrid-1024x682
Two motorists are preparing to drive a 2011 Kia Optima Hybrid into the pages of the Guinness Book of World Records this week as they aim to set a new record for lowest fuel consumption (in a petrol hybrid car) while driving through all 48 adjoining states of America.

The journey will cover 8000 miles of American soil in a factory-standard Kia Optima Hybrid four-door car. Nine Ways To Conserve Your Gasoline

With the help of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), we put together nine easy ways to save on gasoline.

1. Slow Down
One of the best ways to save on gas is to reduce your speed. According to the DOE, every 5 mph you drive over 60 mph represents a 7 percent decrease in fuel economy.

2. Check Your Tire Pressure
Under-inflated tires have more rolling resistance, which causes you to burn more fuel to keep the car moving. Refer to your vehicle's owner's manual, the Tire Pressure Monitoring System (if equipped), or the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) label on or near the driver's side door. Properly inflated tires may improve your fuel economy by up to 3.3 percent.

3. Accelerate With Care
Fast acceleration wastes fuel. Accelerate modestly so the transmission can shift up into the higher gears more efficiently. Rapid acceleration and braking can lower your gas mileage by up to 33 percent on the highway and up to 5 percent during city driving.

4. Drive A Consistent Speed
Follow the lead of trucks and keep a consistent speed. Constant slowing down and speeding up reduces fuel economy. Consider using cruise control when appropriate.

5. Avoid Excessive Idling
Idling your vehicle gets 0 miles per gallon.

6. Stick With Stock
New wheels and tires may look cool, but if they're not the same as the OEM specifications, they could create more resistance, thereby reducing fuel economy.

7. Clean Out Your Car
Carrying around extra baggage — or anything that you don't need for that trip — only adds extra weight to your car and impacts fuel economy. For example, depending on your vehicle's weight, an extra 100 pounds in your vehicle could decrease your MPG by up to two percent.

8. Plan Your Trips Better
Consider grouping your trips instead of making several trips to accomplish your daily tasks. Several short trips may use twice as much fuel as a single, longer trip that covers the same distance.

9. Use The Proper Maintenance Fluids and Replacement Parts
Always use the engine oil, replacement parts and any other fluids that the manufacturer recommends. Change your oil at the recommended intervals and follow the manufacturer's guidelines for all routine maintenance.

2012 Dodge Charger SRT8 First Drive

2011-07-26_1734

When Dodge redesigned the Charger for 2011, we knew that an SRT8 version would follow shortly. It didn't matter what the company did or didn't say. We just knew.

And so it is that the 2012 Dodge Charger SRT8 has finally come to fruition.

Powered by a 6.4-liter Hemi that makes 470 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque and mates to a five-speed automatic transmission, the Charger SRT8 is kind of like America--loud, crude, and large.

Actually, we take that back. It's large, sure, but it's neither crude nor loud, at least not when you don't want it to be.

But take it to the track, and that equation changes.

That doesn't mean the Charger SRT8 is a sleeper. Sedate on the street it may be, but it sticks out. Thank a high-gloss black grille and grille surround for that, along with Hemi/SRT fender badges, the Dodge crosshair grille, and a scooped hood with a heat extractor. A new spoiler and four-inch exhaust tips mark the rear exterior upgrades, along with SRT badging.

Interior changes consist of aluminum fiber accents, a flat-bottomed heated steering wheel with paddle shifters, SRT's Performance Pages (basically, an on-board readout that allows drivers to measure 0-60 times, g-force loads, and other data), heated and cooled bolstered seats with Nappa leather and suede, heated rear seats, and unique bolster material that matches the seats to the door trim. There's also an available uplevel audio system featuring GreenEdge technology, which improves the energy efficiency of speakers and amplifiers.

Pricing has not yet been announced, along with fuel economy numbers, but Dodge is predicting a 25-percent increase in mpgs, thanks to a new active-valve exhaust system which allows the cylinder-deactivation system to spend more time in four-cylinder mode.

An active intake manifold with cam phasing allows for more low-end torque, and that shows on the track. Despite weighing 4,365 lbs, the Charger leaps forward like the muscle cars of yore when the go pedal is mashed.

An adaptive-damping suspension system keeps the Charger planted at speed, especially in "Sport" mode. The two-mode system automatically adjusts to both the road and the driver in Auto mode and firms things up for sportier duty in Sport mode. The steering is revised for better feel and a new heavy-duty power-steering pump has been added. The Charger SRT8 rolls on 20-inch wheels, and Dodge has it pegged for a .88G skidpad result.

Braking comes from 14.2-inch vented rotors in front and 13.8-inch vented rotors in back. All four wheels have Brembo four-piston calipers, and a new underbelly pan with brake ducting helps fight fade. A Ready Alert Braking System prepares the brakes for a panic stop when the driver quickly releases the gas pedal.

Top speed is 175 miles per hour, and 0-60 should occur in the high fours, while the quarter-mile should vanish in a little under 13 seconds. All that performance doesn't mean Dodge has forgotten about safety: Available features include blind-spot alert, forward collision warning, and rear cross-path detection.

On the course at Willow Springs Raceway, the Charger felt planted and stable, albeit with some body roll. It exhibited no nervous tendencies under braking, and the prodigious power allowed for short work of the straightaways. The bolstered seats held us in place nicely, and the nicely-weighted steering offered plenty of feel. For those so inclined, the Performance Pages readouts are quite fun to play around with.

The previous Dodge Charger SRT8 was fast, stable, and with the exception of a boy-racer hood scoop and spoiler, a bit of a sleeper. The new car makes its purpose known from the moment you lay eyes on it, and while it can be used for family duties, it's clear that this car is just as at home on the track as any of its sports-coupe brethren.

Muscle cars that can stop and turn? Welcome to the 21st Century.
